Celtic haven’t made any contact with Leicester over Filip Benkovic.

On December 30 Chris Jullien suffered knee ligament damage against Dundee United. With Nir Bitton pulled into central defence and sent off at Ibrox and Shane Duffy cutting short his trip to Dubai to deal with family matters Celtic are short on central defensive options with Hatem Abd Elhamed and Stephen Welsh the next in line.

Benkovic impressed alongside Dedryck Boyata during the first half of the 2018/19 season but since then his time on the pitch has been severely limited.

Cardiff City returned the Croat to Leicester after one match on loan in the Championship which followed on from six games at Bristol City before Lockdown.

A new option in central defence looks like a priority but discussing potential interest from Celtic in Benkovic, Rodgers told the Daily Record:

It’s certainly a possibility. It’s a huge club and he did very well there. We haven’t had any contact but he’s back now and we will see what happens.

Celtic would be a great move for him. He’s at the age where he really needs to be playing and that didn’t quite materialise at Cardiff.

I would never blame another manager for not playing someone because circumstances can change all the time but unfortunately it didn’t work out. It’s quite simple really, it’s now a case of finding somewhere where he can go next and get some game time.

From January 11 to 20 Celtic face Hibs at home followed by Livingston home and away. If a new centre half is coming in he’s needed to hit the ground quickly, with one match against Wycombe this season it is a bit of a stretch to see Benkovic coming to the rescue and slipping straight into the Celtic side.
