Gheorghe ‘Gica’ Hagi has been linked with becoming the next manager of Celtic.

The claim comes from a Romanian website and seems based on a likely departure from Viitorul and the fact that Gica has been spending time with his son, Ianis in Glasgow.

Neil Lennon is of course in place as Celtic manager but with a season of disastrous results and unrest among fans the club mentioned a review of management in a statement issued last month.

Hagi was a fantastic player at Real Madrid and Barelona a generation ago but has had little success in management forcing him to take control of Viitorul where he became manager with his son Ianis as a player.

Since 2014 he has been in charge of Viitorul but at the age of 55 he seems interested in trying his hand abroad. During 2010/11 he managed his former club Galatasaray.

Romanian website Playsport reports:

A qualified team in the Europa League groups is interested in Gic? Hagi’s services, and the negotiations have been started since the last days of last year. People from the entourage of the former captain of the national team claim that Hagi could leave Viitorul in the next period.

Our sources claim that at this moment, Gica Hagi is in negotiations with Rangers’ dead rival. Celtic Glasgow and would strongly like Gica Hagi after a totally compromised season. Moreover, also during this period, the Romanian coach received proposals to coach teams from Turkey and Spain.

“War” in the Hagi family?

If Gic? Hagi arrives at Celtic Glasgow , Romanian football would witness a very, very special episode. The senior would become, for the first time, his son’s rival, currently legitimized at Rangers.

The variant of Gic? Hagi’s arrival on the white-green bench in Glasgow is very plausible. Celtic have a disastrous season on all fronts. He left Europe ashamed, being the last in a group with AC Milan, Lille and Sparta Prague, and the chances at the championship are almost zero.

Lennon signed a rolling one year contract shortly after the 2019 Sottish up Final win over Hearts.
