Celtic linked with last gasp defender deal

|

Celtic are still in the market to sign a central defender in the final hours of the transfer window.

Soon after signing Jonjoe Kenny on loan from Everton BBC Scotland suggested that there could still be business completed before the midnight deadline.

Throughout the month Celtic were strongly linked with Preston defender Ben Davies but when Liverpool appeared on the scene on Sunday those hopes died a death.

Briefly this morning the name of Tottenham defender Japhet Tanganga was linked with Celtic but there seemed to be no follow up as the day developed.

BBC Scotland’s rolling Transfer Blog reported at 9:50 :

Jonjoe Kenny has joined Celtic on loan from Everton for the rest of the season. Celtic boss Neil Lennon wanted the 23-year-old right-back to replace Jeremie Frimpong, who last week joined Bayer Leverkusen.

Lennon also hopes to sign a central defender on loan before the midnight transfer deadline. However, the club have missed out on Preston North End’s Ben Davies, who has joined Liverpool.

Kenny was on the bench for Everton against Newcastle on Saturday so shouldn’t be far from fitness despite his lack of match time this season at Goodison.

If he can prove his fitness he could go into the side at right-back to face Kilmarnock allowing Kris Ajer to return to central defence where Nir Bitton is a doubt after being injured against St Mirren.
