Shaun Maloney has added some intrigue to speculation over who will be involved in Celtic’s next management team.

After two spells as a player and a year coaching at the club the 38-year-old has a better idea than most about the demands, ambitions and limitations of the club as they look for a new manager under an in-coming CEO with the likelihood of a Director of Football coming into the mix.

Maloney appears to have one of the greatest jobs in football at the moment, assisting Roberto Martinez as he prepares the most prized squad in Europe for this summer’s European Championship.

The Belgian squad is selected from the top clubs across Europe but Maloney seems to be creating a greater media profile in Scotland with appearances on BBC Scotland and Sky Sports.

Appearing on Sportscene last night he was bound to be asked about being linked to Celtic, his side stepping answer was clearly prepared but he did have an observation that many have missed.

The big thing is that they have to get that connection with the support again, if that’s not there they are not going to be able to fight.

Celtic have many issues to deal with as the structure created by Peter Lawwell lies in tatters, convincing a sceptical support that those in charge share their ambitions is essential if the new set up is to make a success of next season- which is just four months away.
