Steven Gerrard has told Nicola Sturgeon that he did everything possible to calm the situation down with Ibrox fans over the weekend.

Perhaps the former England midfield star has forgotten car sharing to work on Saturday to get a video of his arrival to share on Social Media.

Maybe he has forgotten opening the Dressing Room window at Ibrox after the match to encourage law-breakers to forget Social Distancing during their non-essential journeys.

It might have escaped his knowledge that after a training session on Sunday he allowed his boozed up players to run out to celebrate with fans packed outside Murray Park before car sharing home.

It remains to be seen if the Scottish Government will follow-follow the SFA and SPFL in ignoring the protocols that have allowed professional football to be played.

Yesterday the First Minister hinted at finally taking action against the Ibrox club but failing to read the mood of the country and Parliament Gerrard doubled down on his defence of his own law-breaking and that of his players.

Picking up on his interview with STV, the Daily Record reports Gerrard saying:

It’s clear we were in constant chats with police to do all we could to make it as safe as possible but when you’re in that moment and you’ve been through that as fans and players, the work we’ve put in, I hope there is some understanding.

I can understand the reaction, we are going through a pandemic. I can say from the bottom of my heart we did everything we could to calm that situation down.
