David Turnbull has been handed a massive European Championship boost with the news that UEFA are set to increase the squad sizes from 23 to 26.

The midfielder hasn’t yet been included in a full international squad but with three extra places he could get his opportunity this summer.

Steve Clarke is well covered in midfield through Scott McTominay, John McGinn, Callum McGregor, Stuart Armstrong, Ryan Christie and Kenny McLean but with the extra places the door opens up for others.

If an extra striker, midfielder and defender is added Turnbull would probably be up against Chelsea’s Billy Gilmore for a place in the squad.

The BBC reports:

Teams will be allowed to select a 26-player squad instead of the usual 23 at this summer’s European Championship.

The change has been implemented to lessen the load on players after a club season compressed because of the pandemic. It will also help managers adapt if outbreaks occur during the tournament.

The decision, taken by Uefa’s national teams committee on Monday, will be subject to ratification but is not expected to meet any opposition. Uefa’s ruling executive committee will be responsible for ratifying the decision later this week.

Scotland’s first match is on June 15 against Croatia with the squad submitted to UEFA on June 1.

The additional places should provide Leigh Griffiths with extra hope of making the squad. The striker scored from the penalty spot in the shoot-out win over Serbia in November but missed out on last month’s World Cup qualifiers with Che Adams and Kevin Nisbet brought in for their debuts.
