News late last night that Eddie Howe was seriously interested in the Celtic job was greeted with cautious optimism by most fans.

Such is the nervousness of some supporters that the print date, April 1, added extra caution to the prospect of bringing in a successor to Neil Lennon.

Howe has been linked with the job since earlier in the season, from the moment that Celtic announced a managerial review the former Bournemouth boss has never been far from the thoughts of supporters.

When Bournemouth’s five year stay in the EPL ended last August Howe resigned straight away. Even in a season of unprecedented events it is surprising that he remains out of the game with just a few media appearances to maintain his profile.

Switching from a sleepy one club town on the south coast to take charge of Celtic would be a massive change in environment but at the age of 43 Howe will realise that he has to up sticks to advance his career.

No, what has he won?

No, what has he won?

His profile has similarities to Brendan Rodgers who was settled in the London area before uprooting to Swansea, Liverpool and Celtic before getting a top EPL job.

Howe could hold fire to see what happens with the manager’s jobs at Newcastle and Crystal Palace but if Celtic are as serious as they were in 2016 it would seem that a top level appointment might not be too far away.
