Celtic look certain to let Leigh Griffiths contract deadline slip past today without invoking their 12-month option to extend the striker’s deal.

A report originally from the Daily Mail suggests that ‘the Griffiths camp’ believe that a decision will be delayed until a new manager arrives.

According to a recent report in The Sun, April 30 was the cut off date for Celtic to add 12 months onto Griffiths contract which would be on his current terms of £1m a year.

With that deadline set to pass Griffiths can leave for free this summer while Celtic can discuss a deal on lesser terms.

The Daily Record reports:

The Daily Mail state Griffiths’ camp believe a final decision over whether Celtic take up the chance to extend his stay by 12 months won’t be made until a new manager arrives.

Eddie Howe remains the favourite to land the job on a permanent basis with talks ongoing with the former Bournemouth boss.

Griffiths could earn a Celtic lifeline with Patryk Klimala gone and Odsonne Edouard likely to follow him out the exit door with only one year remaining on his contract.

Should Leigh Griffiths get another 12 month Celtic contract?

This season Griffiths has scored eight goals with six coming in the SPFL but just two since the turn of the year.

Who is currently making decisions at Celtic seems to be a mystery with an Interim Manager and two CEO’s currently in the building as Dom McKay shadows Peter Lawwell ahead of his official start date of July 1.
