Trebles aren’t for everyone and neither are doubles. Callum Davidson still has two obstacles to get through if he is to lift his second trophy of the season.

For Steven Gerrard it was another Scottish Cup misery, adding to previous exits to Aberdeen and Hearts.

After 118 minutes in which his side had been matched throughout by St Johnstone it looked like another lucky break for the Liverpool legend when James Tavernier headed past Zander Clark.

The Saints keeper didn’t deserve to be on the losing side, when his side won a stoppage time corner he raced up the park to eye-ball Allan McGregor on the six yard box.

Greegsy seemed to be freaked out, Clark headed the corner goalwards with Chris Kane applying the finishing touch.

Straight into the shoot-out Clark saved from James Tavernier and Kemar Roofe. The Saints players never hesitated, sending four efforts high into the net in front of the Copland Road as Greegsy dived out the way.

Ali McCann scored the final penalty but he’ll be first to acknowledge his goalkeeper as the hero of the day and night.
