Ange Postecoglou’s lack of a UEFA Pro Licence could kill off Celtic’s interest in the Yokohama Marino manager.

The issue was raised on Social Media on Saturday afternoon but overlooked by most newspaper reports on Sunday as they were reassured by their Celtic sources of the brilliance of the 55-year-old Australian.

Some reports touched on Postecoglou requiring a Work Permit or having to quarantine but the issue of the UEFA Proc Licence wasn’t touched on.

This morning The Times picks up on the issue:

Celtic are awaiting the arrival of Ange Postecoglou from Japan to take over as manager, although fears have been expressed that the 55-year-old Greek-born Australian may not hold the necessary qualifications to take up the post.

Uefa requires that anyone who manages a club in the top flight of a European league holds A and B licences and, most importantly, at least has embarked upon the most advanced course, the Uefa Pro licence. It has been reported that the Australian does not hold the relevant qualifications.

According to the Daily Record Postecoglou has been on Celtic’s radar since February, if that was the case the Pro Licence issue would surely have been covered.

After Eddie Howe ended his interest in the Celtic job the focus on Friday seemed to switch to the Yokohama Marino manager whose only experience of European management was a few matches in the Greek Third Division in charge of Panachaiki in 2008.

To get the Pro Licence you need to have the C, B and A licences with candidates which costs £9-10,000 but opens up the door to managing at the highest level.

According to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald in January 2020 Postecoglou didn’t have a UEFA Pro Licence.
