Bayer Leverkusen are reported to be preparing an offer for Kris Ajer.

The defender has one year left on his Celtic contract and could be reunited with Jeremie Frimpong who moved to the German club in January.

Ajer has been a regular in the Celtic side for three years and scored the winning penalty in the 2020 Scottish Cup victory over Hearts at Hampden.

It seems to be an open secret that he will leave Celtic this summer with the Glasgow Times reporting:

The German giants are keen to add the Celtic defender to their ranks and have already, as Herald and Times Sport understands, made contact with the player’s representatives.

It has been widely expected this summer that Norwegian Ajer would be willing to move on from Parkhead and there has been serious interest in the ace.

Newcastle are also considered to be very interested in Ajer and it is understood that newly promoted Norwich have the player on their radar as they plan an assault on the Premier League next season.

If Ajer leaves Celtic the incoming manager will only have Stephen Welsh and Nir Bitton to work with while Chris Jullien recovers from knee surgery.

With over 20 international caps there won’t be any shortage of interest in Ajer with the success of Virgil van Dijk, Kieran Tierney and Stuart Armstrong confirming the quality developed by Celtic.

The non-international Celtic players return for pre-season training on June 17 with the first Champions League qualifiers being played on July 20/21 and 27/28.
