George Baldock is back on Celtic’s transfer radar.
The defender was linked with a move to the hoops in 2019 but opted to sign a new deal at fresh;y promoted Sheffield United.
Celtic’s bizarre transfer policy saw Jeremie Frompong, Hatem Abd Elhamed, Moritz Bauer and Lee O’Connor signed during the same transfer window but as things stand Tony Ralston is the most experienced right-back still under contract. Last season Ralston made one top team appearance.
Baldock has experienced an impressive top flight campaign under Chris Wilder followed by relegation with the Daily Record reporting:
Sheffield United star George Baldock is back on the transfer radar of Celtic. Parkhead boss Ange Postecoglou is pressing ahead with his squad rebuild with just over three weeks to go before the Champions League opener against Danish outfit FC Midtjylland.
Right back is one of the key areas the Australian must address. Postecoglou has a host of alternatives for several positions and Record Sport understands Baldock’s name is high on the full-back list.
The 28-year-old was known to Celtic’s recruitment team two years ago when Swedish international Mikael Lustig left the club but he stayed with the Blades to play in the English Premier League under previous boss Chris Wilder.
However, with Wilder gone and United having been relegated into the English Championship, Baldock is again an option.
Interest on Baldock will lead to questions over who is calling the shots at Celtic but will also indicate that there remains a scouting system inside the club.
Ange Postecoglou has still to make his first signing with virtually every area of the team requiring strengthening.
Celtic’s first match under Postecoglou is on July 20 at home to Midtjylland in a Champions League qualifier.
