Anthony Joseph has attempted to shine some light on what is going on behind the scenes at Celtic.

With Peter Lawwell retiring at the end of this month and Head of Football Operations Nick Hammond leaving the club in March there are some obvious gaps in the structure.

A major rebuild is required during this transfer window but so far there has been no news of any appointments other than Ange Postecoglou as manager.

The new boss needs to hit the ground running but it’s unlikely that he’ll be bringing in, initially at least, any players that he has worked with at Yokohama Marinos or the Australian national side.

Someone that knows the territory and demands will be essential to replace Hammond with Fergal Harkin of Manchester City apparently earmarked for a Director of Football role.

Joseph is usually fairly close to the action with what is going on inside Celtic Park, speaking about the Director of Football role to the Only As Good As Your Last Game podcast, he said:

Well, as far as I’m aware, that’s part of what they’d wanted to do with the restructure. So I think there would’ve likely have been a sporting director and there would’ve been someone specifically put in to do the recruitment.

So Nicky Hammond’s official job title was head of football operations, but his actual role was more to do with recruitment. So I think Celtic are looking to fill two positions – well, certainly they were before when they were talking to Fergal Harkin.

Celtic begin pre-season training on Thursday but no date has been given for Postecoglou taking charge with the issue of a UEFA Pro Coaching licence still to be navigated.
