Celtic fans have been quick to set the record straight with Craig Brown who claimed that Paul Gascoigne was popular with Celtic fans.
The former Scotland boss has enjoyed something of a media revival in recent weeks as the 23 year wait to appear in a major championship came to an end.
Brown was in charge of Scotland when Gascoigne arrived at Rangers in 1995, in his first Ibrox appearance he mimicked playing a flute in a move that endeared him further to the Rangers support.
The Geordie was the epitome of English laddishness in the nineties, tacky, noisy and not the smartest. At Ibrox he found the perfect environment where locals like Ally McCoist, Ian Durrant and Charlie Miller brought him upto date with local cultural issues.
For the best part of three years Gascoigne was allowed to do as he pleased in Scottish football. With his pace gone he used his elbows to hold off opponents, picking up two red cards in Europe before John Rowbotham finally found the red card that Scottish referees were afraid to use.
With his playing days long past Gascoigne is a popular figure at various Ibrox related functions where he can be relied on to sing along to the tunes that the Ibrox club prefer to keep out of the media.
“Gascoigne was popular with both Celtic and Rangers fans, everyone loved him”
Former Scotland boss Craig Brown says Gazza remained popular on both sides of Glasgow, despite scoring England’s winner at Wembley in ’96

We loathed him. If you don’t know that, you know nothing. Gascogne pandered to the knuckledraggers pic.twitter.com/hy84ij41k6

Craig Brown doesn’t speak for the Celtic support who had no time for wife beating sectarian clown

To be clear, I wasn’t a fan of Gazza before he joined Rangers. When he did join them, I may have hated him more than Souness and Mo combined. Especially when he dug out his imaginary flute to incite Celtic fans during a derby match. Think Craig needs to check into a home soon.

I couldn’t tell you 1 celtic fan who ever liked Gascoigne. Yes some thought he had some talent but that doesn’t amount to being popular . It must have been his flute playing celebration that swayed us in his favour ??
