Celtic slip out of contention for rated defender

With a week to go until they face Midtjylland it looks increasingly unlikely that Mario Vuskovic will be in the Celtic side.

The Hadjuk Split defender was first linked with Celtic towards the end of June but with the clock ticking down to the first competitive match Ange Postecoglou remains on the lookout for new players with an emphasis on defenders.

At the age of 19 with one season of top team football behind him there is a high level of risk in signing Vuskovic but he does seem to be attracting attention elsewhere.

The Daily Record reports:

Hajduk are now looking for upwards of £4.5 million and Celtic have not yet been prepared to go as far as that as their desperate hunt for new players continue.

But Feyenoord are now leading the chase and will be able to meet Hajduk’s demands as new manager – Arne Slot, who replaced the retiring former Rangers boss Dick Advocaat in the summer – looks to add players to his squad.

Swiss side Basel were also in the hunt, but Hajduk now see Feyenoord as Vuskovic’s most likely destination after the Rotterdam club stepped up their interest in the last few days.

Basel and Feyenoord should be clubs that Celtic can compete with but at the moment there seems to be a massive overhaul of infrastructure needed as well as players required.

Dom McKay has been officially in charge for a fortnight but has still to make a significant move.

Neil Lennon described transfer activities as a collective but with Peter Lawwell and Nick Hammond no longer at the club there is a lack of knowhow in how to deal with transfer issues.
