The Daily Record has published the Leigh Griffiths story that was all over Social Media on Tuesday.
It was a delicate matter which never made it on Wednesday’s papers but at tea-time tonight the on-line Record broke the story which could put the striker in serious trouble.
Last Thursday Celtic awarded Griffiths a new 12 month contract which was surrounded by talk about last chance and a final opportunity at Celtic.
At 6.36pm on Wednesday the Record reported:
Police are investigating claims that Celtic star Leigh Griffiths sent flirty messages to a 15-year-old girl.
The Scotland international, who was handed a shock new deal with the Hoops last week, is accused of sending a string of private messages on Instagram to the young footballer who plays for a premiership side.
In the leaked exchange, which went viral on social media on Tuesday night, an account linked to the 30-year-old striker appears to request pictures from the under 16s hopeful before sending a clapping emoji to an underwear shot she shared.
Asked about the issue by the Record, a Police Scotland spokesman said: “We have been made aware of social media content. We are making enquiries and assessing for criminality.”
Griffiths was missing from Celtic’s 3-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday today with the story putting Dom McKay in the spotlight.
The new CEO is looking to make his mark but will know that some issues come before what a player might do on the park. McKay will need to decide now between the issues of an employee and a legal matter and its impact on the club.
