Celtic Twitter was taken aback by the news that Leigh Griffiths has been given a new 12 month contract.
Every single sign had pointed to the striker leaving the club but in football anything is possible as this deal has shown.
Griffiths never managed to lay a full 90 minutes last season, hasn’t been spotted at pre-season training at Lennoxtown but has now picked up a new contract with the approval of Ange Postecoglou.
Whether the decision was taken based on Griffiths being in good shape or the lack of alternatives remains to be seen.
The former Wolves striker appears to have been in the Last Chance Saloon quite a few times but incredibly has bounced back for another chance at the club he joined in 2014.
Nadir Cifti, Moussa Dembele and Patryk Klimala are just some of the strikers that have come and gone since Griffiths made his Celtic debut- with a Champions League qualifier coming up and a trip to Tynecastle on the opening day of the SPFL season his next Celtic goals will be warmly welcomed.
Was it the right decision to give Griffiths a new contract?
Yes, we need him and his goals
No, he's wasted too many chances
? We are pleased to announce we have agreed a one-year contract extension with #CelticFC striker @Leighgriff09! ??

I never seen that coming.
Hopefully Leigh can kick on, get himself fit & stay that way.
He’s an out & out goalscorer, if we get him in shape we’ve a cracking player on our hands.
It’s up to him where he goes from here, let’s hope he’s had his wake up call. pic.twitter.com/ajNRpYOrNW

Obviously people complaining about this have seen what he’s been doing before and during pre season? Shut up!! and give the guy a chance can definitely score when he’s up for it and I believe he’ll play a massive part this season

Happy with this, had a shit few years but nobody can deny when he’s fit albeit rarely he’s one of the best Strikers in Scotland. Best of luck @Leighgriff09 ?

Great move, a proper fit Griff is best striker in Scotland. He’s a lucky Bhoy to still be at the club… Hopefully he repays us

Last chance saloon, Griff. And big Ange doesn’t look like the sort of landlord you want to mess with.
Good luck.— Chris Cairns (@cairnstoon) July 1, 2021
How to burn your goodwill in one fell swoop. A very poor decision.

This is… odd. Didn’t see this one coming. Hope he can find some fitness & form ?

Don’t understand those on here saying “when he’s fit…”. He isn’t fit and hasn’t been for well over a year now. Why assume he’ll suddenly bust a gut and get into shape now at 31?
