Gent have announced the signing of Vakoun Bayo on a four year contract.

After falling out of favour at Celtic and spending last season on loan with Toulouse in the French Second Division the move marks a step up for the 24-year-old.

Celtic signed Bayo in January 2019 alongside Marian Shved, Andrew Gutman and Manny Perez with only winger Shved left on the pay-roll.

Last night Gent coach Tom Matthys told the club website:

Vakoun is a fast and agile striker who is very strong offensively. He is a player who will offer our coach many opportunities up front.

According to the report in The Sun Celtic have collected a fee of £1.4m which would be a very healthy outcome for a player in the final year of his contract.

Although Bayo seemed miles away from being involved in the Celtic first team it does leave the club in a very vulnerable position over Odsonne Edouard.

With Leigh Griffiths removed from the first team squad Edouard and Albian Ajeti are the only strikers available to Ange Postecoglou with just 10 days to go until Celtic face Midtjylland in a Champions League qualifier.

Mikey Johnston or Ryan Christie could be pushed into action as an emergency striker but that move hasn’t been overly successful in the past.
