Running in tandem with the build up to tonight’s match against Bayer Leverkusen has been claims that Gordon Strachan is about to become caretaker manager of Celtic.

Ange Postecoglou has been in charge for just over three months but has found that the reality of managing Celtic in the current circumstances is an enormous challenge. He has yet to appoint any coaches or backroom staff.

It took Celtic 106 days from the resignation of Neil Lennon to appoint his successor but as Dom McKay recently discovered things can move rapidly at Celtic for ‘outsiders’.

Strachan is already at work on a three month consultancy inside Celtic, where two of his sons are already employed. The role covers the Academy, B team and Women’s team.

Since being sacked as Scotland manager in 2017 he has been involved in media work alongside a role as Dundee’s Director of Football. Last season he was a regular pundit on Celtic TV, telling fans that all was well inside the club while performances fell apart.

Strachan has been absent from the TV screens this season, tonight BT Sport will have Chris Sutton, Neil Lennon and Paul Lambert on duty at the match with Bayer Leverkusen.

With the Dunhill Cup being played at St Andrews Dermot Desmond may attend tonight’s match.
