I’m not confident- Gerrard’s worry over Goldson’s contract stalemate

Steven Gerrard has admitted that he has no idea if Connor Goldson will sign a new Ibrox deal.

The defender was one of Gerrard’s first signings when he took charge of the club, last season Goldson played in every minute of every match but looked on as others such as James Tavernier were given improved contracts.

Turning 29 in December his next contract will be the most lucrative of his career, and probably unrecognisable to the one that he agreed as a Brighton reserve in the summer of 2018.

The wage structure at Ibrox has been hugely inflated in recent times with Kemar Roofe and John Lundstrum believed to be on over £40,000 per week.

I’m not concerned, I’m not confident. I’m not really overthinking about it, Connor is a big boy, he’s a man. Ross Wilson’s (transfer guru) office is next to mine. Connor knows what I think of him from a personal point of view and how much I want him to stay here but at the same time we have to concentrate on the football so it’s important that Connor keeps playing the way that he is.

I thought that he was magnificent again last night. He was my Player of the Year and I think that for me he has got more consistency in his game as time has gone on at Rangers. He is a really valuable player for me and us, the cloob. So hopefully we can find a solution in terms of getting him tied up.

I can’t really go any further in terms of letting you know how much I want it to happen, how much I want him to stay, but, at the end of the day I’m not Connor so I don’t know what he wants and I’m not the cloob. I don’t do the bank balance and the numbers. For me I can only tell both parties how much I want this to happen.

Goldson will be able to sign a pre-contract agreement in January without any transfer fee going to his current club.
