Chris Sutton is looking for Giorgos Giakoumakis to put his stamp on Celtic after the international break.

With Odsonne Edouard and Leigh Griffiths moving out on transfer deadline day Celtic brought in last season’s top scorer from Holland.

Transfer speculation meant that Giakoumakis hadn’t played any football for VVV Venlo before he made his move with September a combination of training and injury treatment.

A false start against Raith Rovers in the Premier Sports Cup was followed by a low key debut when the game was dead and buried at home to Bayer Leverkusen.

With Kyogo spending time in Saudi Arabia and Japan during the international break a fully fit, firing and functioning Giakoumakis would be invaluable for Celtic next week at Motherwell.

In today’s Daily Record, Sutton writes:

We now need to see what Giorgos Giakoumakis is all about. It’s fair to say it’s been an inauspicious start.

I feel a bit sorry for the Greek striker. He arrived with a big reputation after being top scorer in Holland last season with a team that got relegated but he’s had nothing but bad luck since.

He had issues when he landed but then got himself fit and suffered a set back in the warm up when he was about to make his debut against Raith Rovers.

Of course that’s a worry. He’s not taken part in much of a pre-season and hasn’t played any games. It’s not a great sign breaking down that early.

It’s now October and he’s yet to start a game. This last week at Lennoxtown should be invaluable though. He needs to get up to speed quickly.

It will be Thursday before Celtic’s internationalists return to Lennoxtown, Giakoumakis and Jota are among the few attacking players not on international duty.
