Ally McCoist fears that Steven Gerrard will quit Ibrox to manage Aston Villa.

Since Dean Smith was sacked at lunchtime on Sunday there has been strong speculation that the former Liverpool midfielder is the man to take over at Villa Park.

Managing in the EPL for wealthy owners would make a big change to looking at Alfredo Morelos and Allan McGregor most mornings with the ibrox Money Tap switched off a year ago with only token transfer fees paid for Jack Simpson and Scott Wright during the last two windows.

Jamie Carragher, Danny Wilson and Jamie Redknapp are leading the media push for Gerrard to get the Villa job but fearing the return of Graeme Murty or even a recall for himself McCoist doesn’t want to contemplate Gerrard walking away.

The Daily Record reports:

Speaking on talkSPORT, he disputed the narrative that taking over at Villa is too big an opportunity to turn down.

McCoist said: “How is it such a big opportunity? He wants the Liverpool job, right? What if he goes to Aston Villa and it doesn’t work out? He’s got a better chance of success at Range rs than at Aston Villa, if he wants the Liverpool job.

“If he goes to Villa and it doesn’t work out, he’s not going to get the Liverpool job. If he stays at Rangers, retains the league and goes straight into the Champions League – a great success – then he’s got a better chance of the Liverpool job.”

With his wife and family refusing to move to Glasgow, joining Villa after three and a half years in Scotland will carry lots of appeal for Gerrard and his enormous ego. It could be a long and painful wait at Ibrox for Jurgen Klopp stepping down at Anfield.

Hasn’t exactly achieved much at wangers after blowing10s of millions of funny money.
Any manager in the Scottish top flight would be expected to win the league after squandering that much funny money, especially when over half the Celtic team couldn’t be bothered.
