Ally McCoist has been left brutally disappointed by the manner of Steven Gerrard’s departure from Ibrox.

Last Friday the cheeky chappie was sharing the banter with Chris Sutton with the confidence of a two week old interview between the then Ibrox boss and Emma Dodds following the 2-0 win over Brondby.

‘Don’t ask stupid questions then’ she was told as Coisty, Doddsy and the other cheerleaders reassured themselves that Mister Gerrard wasn’t about to pop up at Newcastle beaming about joining a yooj club and the challenge of managing in the EPL.

On the blindside Aston Villa were starting a run of five defeats, results that were going to cost Dean Smith his job with the ripple effects felt at Ibrox.

Following a midweek train trip to London the jigsaw pieces fell into place, on Thursday morning Gerrard was the Villa boss with the Daily Record reporting on Coisties anger after Gerrard gave him the slip:

Being brutally honest, there is a bad taste in some of the supporters’ mouths about the way it has happened. Particularly after that interview where Emma asked the question, as she should. That’s her job.

The answer implied ‘I’m going nowhere’. I think we can all agree on that. He was very forthright, answering Emma in a fashion as if, ‘look, it’s a silly question, I’m absolutely going nowhere.’

And then, maybe two weeks later, he clearly has gone somewhere — so I can totally understand and get the frustration, disappointment and maybe anger with some of the Rangers fans.

In December 2014 McCoist signed himself onto gardening leave soon after being drawn against Celtic in the semi-final of the League Cup. Kenny McDowall then Stuart McCall steered the club through to a third-place finish in The Championship.
