The top football writers at The Telegraph are running with the Gerrard to Villa story, claiming that the Sevco boss in interested in the vacancy created by the sacking of Dean Smith.

Gerrard hasn’t been seen or heard of since Sunday’s win over Ross County but this afternoon the Ibrox PR operation sent out a message that no contact had been made from Villa.

An approach will only be made once outline agreement has been reached with Gerrard and his advisors, when things get to that stage a club is virtually powerless to convince a manager to stay on. Celtic discovered that in February 2019 when Brendan Rodgers’ move was swiftly concluded.

Covering the story in The Telegraph, the Daily Record reports:

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is reportedly “interested” in speaking to Aston Villa over the vacant manager’s position.

Record Sport revealed on Monday night Gerrard is one of their top targets with CEO Christian Purslow pushing for the former Liverpool star after Dean Smith was sacked last week.

While Rangers have made clear no official approach has yet been made, it’s expected that Villa will make their move in the coming days.

Now the Daily Telegraph is reporting that Gerrard is keen to at least discuss a potential move, with the manager interested in the project in the Midlands.

The newspaper reports that Villa have been carrying out background work on the Liverpool legend and his staff, and hope to have a new manager in place by Monday.

Salvaging the best possible compensation package for their manager and his coaching staff now seems to be the only option open to Douglas Park. According to the report in The Telegraph compensation will be around £2m which would be a record deal for the club created by Charles Green in 2012.

If Michael Beale and Gary McAllister follow Gerrard out the door it could pave the way for Graeme Murty to enjoy a third stint as caretaker.

John Percy of the Telegraph was first to break the news of Celtic’s approach to Yokohama F Marinos to bring in Ange Postecoglou after moves for Eddie Howe fell through.

    “Ambitious Midlands club”?

If they were ambitious they wouldn’t go for 1-in-probably-12 Gerrard…
