Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that Leigh Griffiths’ Celtic career is now over.

Eight years ago Neil Lennon signed the striker from Wolves for around £1m with the goals and unsavoury publicity quickly following.

Griffiths has been written off multiple times as new managers and strikers arrived at the club but this time it is all over with Daizen Maeda, Giorgos Giakoumakis and Kyogo Furuhashi competing for a place in Postecoglou’s side.

The history books will show Griffiths as one of the highest goalscorers in Celtic’s history but with 123 to his name it isn’t outrageous to suggest that he could have ended up close t the 200 mark.

In season 2015/16 Griffiths carried Celtic to the title, scoring 40 goals in total including 31 from 32 SPFL Premiership appearances, since then his return has been in sharp decline with a variety of reasons served up to explain why.

Now at the age of 31 it is on to ‘the next challenge’ which will be tonight for Dundee against his first club Livingston. Cut loose from his loan tag Griffiths can now play against Celtic but it is unlikely to be a prospect for hoops fans to fear.

I think it has come to an end, yeah. Leigh’s now looking for the next chapter of his career – an outstanding football career at Celtic.

All of us, we kind of pass through clubs, but you want to leave a mark there when you do and Leigh’s certainly done that.

I think he can look back on his Celtic career with great pride and he goes onto the next chapter of his football career. We wish him all the best.

Ewan  Henderson and Liam Shaw have left Celtic to go on loan to Hibs and Motherwell.
