Harsh lessons for Slippy G as he discovers English refs aren’t as accommodating

Steven Gerrard is discovering the harsh facts of life in English football where referees are banned from being involved in matches effecting their favourite club.

Unlike in Scotland the Liverpool legend has now gone eight matches without a Villa fan with a whistle taking charge with yesterday’s defeat at Brentford the fourth that Gerrard has suffered.

Danny Inges gave Villa the lead after 16 minutes but the home side were level three minutes from the break thanks to Yoane Wissa.

With 10 minutes left to play Mister Gerrard sent on Trezeguet but he had barely got upto speed when Mads Roerslev put Brentford ahead in the 83rd minute.

Defeat was staring Villa in the face when Trezeguet found himself in the Brentford penalty box and short on options. Possibly based on video clips from Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent the Villa striker opted for the sniper approach as he threw his head back, put his hands to his face and fell to the deck as Samman Goddos took possession and put Brentford on the front foot.

Incredibly referee Craig Pawson never awarded a penalty, Ryan Porteous wasn’t sent off and Villa lost the match 2-1.  That wouldn’t have happened if Nick Walsh, Bobby Madden or John Beaton knew the significance of a win for Mister Gerrard’s team.
