Middlesbrough are reported to be considering a bid for John Lundstram, almost certainly on loan.

The midfielder moved to Ibrox last summer on an expensive Bosman deal but has only started eight of the 20 SPFL matches so far with his appearances dropping noticeably since Steven Gerrard walked out on the club.

Other than the ‘world record’ undisclosed fee paid for Nathan Patterson by Everton there seems to be minimal interest in the Ibrox stars as Ross Wilson frantically tries to cut costs.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst already has plenty of midfield options with a number able to play in the ‘Lundstram role’ such as Ryan Jack, Glen Kamara and Steve Davis.

The Daily Record claims:

Wilder (Middlesbrough’s new manager Chris) and Lundstram enjoyed great success through four years together at Sheffield United after he signed him from Oxford United.

However, the relationship ended with the boss leaving the Blades and the player refusing a new deal at Bramall Lane before subsequently switching to Glasgow last summer.

Record Sport understands the boss would be keen to work again with his old charge having taken charge on Teesside and is keeping an eye on his Ibrox developments.

Lundstram was signed by Steven Gerrard, but has featured sparingly for new boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst since his arrival.

The Scouser has started just two of the Dutchman’s nine matches in charge and could be pushed further down the pecking order after the arrival of American James Sands from New York City.

Middlesbrough are reported to be offering Riley McGree a contract worth £14,000 a week, Video Celts understands that Lundstram’s Ibrox salary is worth around three times that amount.

Celtic discovered last season how disruptive it can be to bring in loan players picking up wages far in excess of their existing players.

Promotion to the EPL is the game changer for every Championship club with little resistance coming from Ibrox if Middlesbrough get serious over their interest in Lundstram.
