Scandinavian club heavily linked with Celtic deal

Vasilis Barkas appears to be the subject of serious interest from IFK Gothenburg.

The goalkeeper seemed close to joining Sheffield United earlier this week but that deal died almost as quickly as it surfaced with comments made about a loan fee, wages and an option to buy in the summer.

On the surface Gothenburg would have less finances to offer for Barkas but Greek site Sportime appears to be treating the interest very seriously:

The historic Gothenburg is the team that is looking for the big transfer and Vassilis Barkas of Celtic really likes it. The 28-year-old former international goalkeeper is on the concession list, however, the requirements that the “Celts” have so far do not allow any move to be made.

The ” Daily Record ” had reported that Sheffield United tried to acquire Barca but Celtic’s demands were to cover the player’s contract (according to information it is around 750,000 euros for the whole year) but also to enter a purchase option at 2, 5 million pounds.

The deal was not made with the team from the Championship and the transfer period is coming to an end. But not in all countries. According to information, the team that is looking for the big trick to acquire Barca is Gothenburg.

Yes, the team with which Giannis Anestis played for more than 90 times and one of the most historic teams in Sweden.

Gothenburg, according to the same information, asked Celtic about the financial status of a possible loan and in the next hours / days it will be seen if there is a development. After all, the transfer window in Sweden still has time.

However, Gothenburg is not able to make a big financial opening and there are other goalkeepers from the Scandinavian market on its list.

Barkas, for whom Celtic paid close to 5 million euros to acquire him from AEK, has played in 2 matches this year. One for the Scottish Championship and one for the Champions League qualifiers.

After failing to resign Fraser Forster and being unable to agree terms with Craig Gordon Celtic turned to Barkas who had impressed for AEK Athens against the hoops in the 2018 Champions League qualifiers.

An underwhelming performance against Ferencvaros set the tone for the Greek who shared goalkeeping duties with Scott Bain throughout the season with Conor Hazard given a short run around Christmas.

With a contract running until May 2024 Barkas will have the ultimate decision to make on his future but at best he appears to be third choice for Ange Postecoglou with just two appearances this season.

Earlier this month Hazard joined HJK Helsinki on a year long loan, Gothenburg also play through the calendar year with their season starting in February.
