Celtic fans were quick to come up with suggestions for Kris Boyd after he claimed that Aaron Ramsey was the biggest transfer to Scottish football since Paul Gascoigne swapped Lazio for Rangers.

The former Kilmarnock striker is certainly entitled to his opinion but it is hard to back it up on any grounds other than wages.

Ramsey is widely reported to be earning £400,000 a week with Juventus on the back of his Bosman move from Arsenal in 2019. In terms of playing achievements his record is at best patchy.

There were plenty of suggestions about bigger names coming to Scotland since Gazza, fellow Welshmen John Hartson and Craig Bellamy were starring in the EPL when they moved to Celtic. After his loan at Parkhead Bellamy went on to play for Liverpool, West Ham and Manchester City.

At Ibrox the de Boer brothers arrived fresh from Barcelona, of a similar vintage it cost Dick Advocaat £12m to get Tore Andre Flo from Chelsea.

There is even a Scottish option- Paul Lambert won the Champions League for Borussia Dortmund in May 1997, before the year was out he was part of Wim Jansen’s Celtic side that included a dread-locked Swede. Stefan Klos was a Dortmund team-mate of Lambert.

Oh, and Joe Hart won a few trophies with Manchester City plus 75 England caps before joining Celtic last August.

Captain Keane, with almost as many medals as Scott Brown when he arrived at Celtic…different stratosphere to ramsey!!

How about Franck Sauzee at Hibs and Fabrizio Ravanelli at Dundee. Hibs also signed George Best in an earlier era.

I remember being really pleased when we signed Freddie Ljungberg.
A Swedish International who had done it all with the gunners, free scoring midfielder that would run all day.
Unfortunately his legs had gone and he wasn’t up to the demands of the Scottish game.
    Just saying ?
