Celtic still have a week to find a club for Vasilis Barkas in Turkey with the Swedish options open until the end of March.

Sheffield United showed some interest in the out of favour keeper but the terms, wages and sell-on options weren’t suitable.

Barkas has only made two appearance this season and appears to have dropped to fourth choice at Celtic behind Joe Hart, Scott Bain and Tobi Oluwayemi.

With a contract running through until May 2024 on wages believed to be around £20,000 per week the keeper won’t be in any rush unless every detail is to his liking.

After Fraser Forster turned down the chance to return to Celtic in the summer of 2020 the club turned to Barkas who had impressed for AEK Athens two years earlier in Champions League qualifiers.

Although not directly at fault in the Champions League defeat from Ferencvaros there was an instant feeling that he didn’t pull off the big match-changing saves that Forster had excelled in.

Ange Postecoglou gave the Greek internationalist a vote of confidence in pre-season but after losing a bad goal to Midtjylland the club moved quickly for Hart who has made the number one spot his own.
