Alex Rae has put his media career on hold to be reunited with Paul Ince in management at Reading.

The former St Mirren has been a figure of fun on Radio Clyde and BT Sport as he attempts to come over as impartial in-between stints with Neil McCann and Shelley Kerr on ‘Rangers’ TV.

Most famously Rae recently dismissed the likely impact of Reo Hatate at Celtic, explaining that a 6 out of 10 utility man rarely makes an impact at first team level, In contrast bringing in James Sands on loan from New York City is an inspired move by Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

This afternoon Reading announced:

Reading Football Club can confirm that former Wolves, Sunderland and Millwall midfielder Alex Rae has joined the club as our new Interim Assistant Manager.

Rae, 52, will join Paul Ince, Michael Gilkes and Mikele Leigertwood in the Royals dugout tonight for our meeting with Birmingham City at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

The former Dundee and St. Mirren manager is well known to Interim Manager Ince, after they played together in midfield for Wolves from 2002 to 2004.

This isn’t the first time Ince and Rae will have worked together as management staff either, Rae assisted the former-England captain during his time as boss of Blackpool during the 2013-14 season.

Reading are currently third bottom in The Championship, five points above Derby and Peterborough, eight adrift of Hull City in the final safety place.

Rae was a Wolves team-mate of Ince and assisted him in management at MK Dons and Notts County as well as Blackpool.

Never anywhere good enough to be near the green and white hoops as a player although deep down probably wished he could. Settling now with blue and white hoops. How ironic.
