Trying to bring a 1990s comparison to current events isn’t the smartest policy, almost everything has changed.

When Giovanni van Bronckhorst moved to Rangers in 1998 he was part of a massive spending spree underwritten by the Bank of Scotland and ultimately the tax-payer when the acquisition of BoS almost sunk The Halifax.

Jorg Albertz, Lorenzo Amoruso and Sergio Porrini were already on wages that the club couldn’t afford, crocks like Marco Negri and Seb Rozenthal were still drawing massive wages.

To feed the ego of Dick Advocaat a fee of £6m was spent on van Bronckhorst with similar sums used to sign Andrei Kanchelskis, Arthur Numan and Colin Hendry.

Those days fuelled the fire, the BoS overdraft was replaced with a scam involving disguised remuneration that killed the club in 2012 when no True Blue businessman was prepared to take on the risk of having to pay off the glory days under Dave Murray.

It seems that van Bronckhorst thought that the old conditions were still in place when he took the job on at the Tribute Act, parroting those sort of lines is former team-mate Albertz in the Daily Record.

Spending what you earn is a concept for others, regardless of circumstances ‘Rangers’ have to spend spend spend. Certainly outspend Celtic and feed the Superiority Complex that is the backbone of their support. Without it there is nothing.

While The Hammer sends through his weekly column from Germany his former team-mate is dealing with an ageing, stale squad and no money to spend on players.

A £37m starlet from Manchester United and a £400,000/week Juventus star aren’t much use when you are facing a well drilled and highly motivated Celtic team.

With Albertz and others feeding the myth van Bronckhorst’s problems are piling up. If he thought he had problems on Wednesday night he’s in for the shock of his life if the gap at the top of the Premiership grows to more than one point with a £40m Champions League ticket at stake.
