Vasilis Barkas is reported to be wanting to quit his four year Celtic contract.

The keeper moved from AEK Athens in July 2020 after Fraser Forster turned down another loan deal with Craig Gordon released at the same time.

From the moment Celtic lost to Ferencvaros in the Champions League things looked bleak for Barkas with Neil Lennon’s erratic style of management not helping.

Barkas, Scott Bain and Conor Hazard all had spells in the team before the turn of the year as Celtic’s season turned into a shambles.

Ange Postecoglou gave the former AEK Athens keeper a fresh start but after losing a soft goal to Midtjylland the new manager signed up Joe Hart who has been first choice since the day he arrived at the club.

The Daily Record reports:

According to a report in Greece, both Celtic and the stopper are ready to cut their losses after Barkas failed to live up to his bumper £5million price tag.

Onlarissa report that the goalkeeper has “demanded” to leave Celtic Park in the summer to bring the curtain down on his nightmare spell.

They note that Barkas has “already begun the countdown to his departure” if a suitor can be found.  It is noted that Celtic have told Greece cap that he is free to find a new club and had hoped to offload him in the January window.

Recovering any transfer fee would be good business by Celtic with any new club expected to match the keeper’s Celtic salary which has more than two years still to run.
