Last weekend Neil Doncaster and the team at the SPFL were busy putting things in place to bring forward Motherwell’s home match against Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s European heroes.
Motherwell had to bring everything forward, crucially Sky Sports and Police Scotland had to give their approval with a number of other issues ironed out to give the Ibrox squad an extra 24 hours to prepare for Thursday’s match away to RB Leipzig.
Finally on Tuesday afternoon Motherwell were informed that the match had been brought forward, Graham Alexander could prepare for a Saturday rather than a Sunday match.
Result, great news for the Ibrox club and fans of the UEFA co-efficient. With the game on the Saturday van Bronckhorst and the lads could have an extra day of rest.
Except last night the Ibrox club arranged their Player of the Year Awards night which is generally a bit of a booze up for corporate fans to run shoulders with their heroes.
In 2019 reserve goalkeeper Andy Firth shared some lively video clips of team-mates Joe Worrall, Connor Goldson and Allan McGregor unwinding.
Four nights before their Europa League semi-final the Ibrox squad were enjoying a night out in a city centre hotel.
As a bonding exercise it be just the trick to bring the players together with McGregor, Goldson, Steve Davis, Leon Balogun and Scott Arfield all set to quit when their contracts expire.
On the other hand, with an eight day schedule of Leipzig, Celtic, Leipzig coming up an early night might have been better for professional athletes rather than a knees-up with club fat-cats.
