Eddie Howe had no regrets watching Ange Postecoglou soak up the credit for Celtic’s victory in the Glasgow derby on Sunday.

The former Bournemouth boss was strongly linked with replacing Neil Lennon but made it clear that he was taking a 12 month break from football.

Celtic went to the extent of issuing a statement about missing out on Howe as they turned their attention quickly to Postecoglou.

It wasn’t until December that Howe returned to management, with Newcastle clear of relegation and Celtic close to winning the SPFL Premiership title it seems that things have worked out well for all parties.

Asked if he had regretted not taking the Celtic job, Howe told Newcastle World:

From my perspective, no. I’m focused on the future for me and very much embracing everything Newcastle

Reflecting on Sunday’s action at Ibrox, the Newcastle boss added:

I did actually watch the Old Firm game on Sunday. It was a very interesting game, the atmosphere is always electric and are very interesting games to watch from a coach’s point of view.

Full credit to him (Postecoglou), his staff and players for what he’s done this season because it was a team in slight transition and I think he’s been excellent in recruitment.

Neil Lennon resigned as Celtic manager on February 23, it took Celtic 106 days to appoint Postecoglou with the former Yokohama Marinos boss pitched into Champions League qualifiers with just Liel Abada added to his squad.

In total 11 players were signed during the summer, with four more arriving in January the turnover is almost complete with future transfer activity expected to be much more selective.

This was not a slight transition, this was a major transition and I think it may have been too much to handle for Mr Howe. He has managed to steer them clear of relegation, so well done to him. However, I believe this is his area, not with Celtic. We have a major player at the helm.

I was about to say the same. I have major doubts Howe would’ve had anywhere near the impact Ange has had. Howe’s cowardice (I don’t care what he says he was clearly keechin’ it at the pressure he was going to be under) worked out great for us in the end!
