According to respected French publisher L’equipe Celtic are showing interest in Caen striker Alexandre Mendy.

When a story pops up on a foreign website it tends to carry substance with L’equipe not in the market for luring visitors on the back of speculative transfer tales.

Mendy has scored 16 goals in 30 appearances in Lique 2 this season with a fee of 3m eoros quoted to get a deal completed.

At the age of 28 there is unlikely to be much attention on a sell-on fee but with Peter Lawwell removed from the scene project signings such as Vakoun Bayo and Patryk Klimala are no longer the priority. Ready made starters are the preference of Ange Postecoglou.

L’equipe reports:

The Caen striker, 8th in Ligue 2, is of great interest to the Scottish club. The latter would have already made a proposal of 3 million euros in order to attract him.

Will Caen lose its top scorer? It is not yet recorded but Alexandre Mendy (28 years old, under contract until 2024), author of 16 goals in 30 Ligue 2 matches this season, is courted by Celtic Glasgow. The Scottish club would have submitted an offer of 3 million euros to secure his services.

Caen, 8th in Ligue 2, is keen on his striker but he would also be ready to negotiate and let his striker go in the event of a higher offer.

French and Belgian football is heavily scouted with the leading lights in both countries outside of Celtic’s budget.

Odsonne Edouard was the last striker that the hoops signed directly from France but options like that are a rarity.

As recently as the Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden Celtic were caught short with a lack of strikers when Giorgos Giakoumakis was missing through injury and Kyogo Furuhashi not yet ready to play from the start.

Following in the footsteps of Edouard and Moussa Dembele is likely to appeal to Mendy, if Celtic can secure direct entry to the Champions League group stage the prospect of a move to Glasgow is bound to appeal.
