Liverpool standard but why still in Scotland? BBC Scotland investigates the James Tavernier Mystery

In a report that would have passed the Succulent Lamb test at the height of the Murray Years BBC Scotland has been investigating why Liverpool or Manchester City haven’t swooped for James Tavernier.

It seems that a run of penalties and some goals against SPFL clubs has blind-sided Nick McPeat- or he simply wants to climb the promotion ladder inside BBC Scotland’s Sports Department.

Tav is a decent English Championship level full-back, impressive going forward and very suspect up against a direct opponents.

McPeat turns to Stevenage boss Steve Evans and Mark Warburton to get to the root of the Tav Mystery while failing to grasp some very important faces.

Seven loan spells at clubs like Carlisle, MK Dons and Shrewsbury mean that the Ibrox defender is well known south of the border. Journey-man is as good as it gets.

If at any stage an EPL club wanted a defender that struggles to defend they could have snapped up the 30-year-old who moved to Ibrox from Wigan in 2015.

One trophy win out of 19 during his time in Scotland is nothing to get excited about- unless you are at BBC Scotland with boxes to tick as you aspire to be the next Tom English, Kenny Macintyre or Alasdair Lamont.

He does put in good crosses and his movement is reasonable.

He can also take a good freekick and be relied upon to dispatch the majority of the many, many, many penalties that Old Firm FC get.

However defensively, his positional sense is poor, weak in the tackle and can’t defend. He is a confidence player who is mentally fragile. He is at the correct club where even the slightest good thing is praised to the heavens by a fawning press.

In summary he is reasonable going forward but very suspect defensively. Is he in the class of Tierney or Robertson ?

Good god anyone would think there is a club desperate for cash now that the league titles automatic champions league cash pot is slipping away, bust or flush if you like so far as betting your house on a horse.

The first thing i thought when reading this was wow 183 goals in 337 games is very impressive the club he plays for must have had more penalties than i could recall, but that is the thing we are led to believe something which is not true but then i had re-read the article to see it was not total goals which is a bit mischieavous as nobody would likely read this twice.

The second thought I had was that Liverpool would not fancy paying a massive transfer fee after Warburtons comments but the reality is that this is also complete nonsense trying to inflate a transfer fee for a player who has won 1 trophy which was a covid trophy in front of no fans, the problem he has is performing in front of fans which I find a bit amusing given the nature of the job he does.

Trump and the tory party do not have a look in compared to these imposters. Scotlands sports media shame.

  • Scud Missile says:

Man City,Liverpool and Man United all shop at the top end of the transfer market so why would they be looking in a charity shop or a bric-a-brac shop for player like Havabeer.

  • Tony B says:

He is a shite defender. End of.

  • Ciarán72 says:

Tav is a great penalty taker, but in Engerland he would not get to take so many because the officials can’t referee their favourite boyhood klub/klubs

  • Stephen Buchan says:

He cant defend and admitted he and his team cant handle pressure. A championship player at best.

  • Cairncross says:

Good Point – Taking the plethora of soft penalties given to Old Firm FC

Bad Points – Headless chicken when real defending is needed or pace against him
    Lays down under pressure
Talks the standard Old Firm FC succulence drivel.
Poor 5% major trophy winning record
Nowhere near a Tierney or Robertson level.
Unfortunately ended up at Old Firm FC.

  • Paddybhoy67 says:

Joe, the only truthful words in that article are ” …people won’t pay the money.” Hull, Reading and Barnsley just don’t have the money to spend.

  • Seppington says:

EPL sides want players who csn handle the pressure but this dumbass famously admitted to going to pieces when the angry bears in the stands got on his and his team’s backs for being rubbish.
Only Currants and their media sycophants believe anyone in their side is worth anything (Ramsay aside, but even then…?). In the last five years we’ve attracted buyers for many players even when we didn’t want them but Sevco can’t get anyone to buy their duds even though they hock them constantly through their compliant clowns I mean media lickspittles.

A joke of a club. Not funny though. Like Andy Cameron, I guess….

  • Sean McGinley says:

Eat yer hearts out Jurgen and Pep… See what ye canny have !!!
