Jack Simpson could find an Ibrox escape route to Birmingham City but the Championship club are unlikely to get close to his Ibrox wages.

The defender was snaped up by Steven Gerrard from Bournemouth at the end of the January 2021 transfer window and instantly referred to as a future England star.

Reality was somewhat different with Leon Balogun, Connor Goldson and Filip Helander keeping Simpson out of the first team picture.

With John Souttar signed this month and Leon King promoted to the first team squad Simpson’s prospects are bleak but he does have the consolation of being under contract until May 2025 in what is known as a legacy issue.

Discussing City’s transfer options, Birmingham Live reports:

Similar to the Aflie Mawson claim, Blues are said to want to reignite interest in another January target Jack Simpson. They were said to have been interested in the Rangers defender late in the last window.

Simpson has struggled to make an impact since joining Rangers from Bournemouth in February 2021. He has made only 13 appearances since then and has not been in a match-day squad in the league since January.

Football Insider say the central defender has held talks with Rangers bosses and is expected to return to England in the summer. Blues and Middlesbrough were mentioned as interested parties.

Birmingham did sign Juninho Bacuna from the Tribute Act in January after the Dutch ace flopped spectacularly in his five month spell at Ibrox.
