Image for Callum McGregor reveals the secret of the mask

It was almost the symbol of Celtic’s title win- the mask our skipper wore!

The Glasgow Derby on February 2 is one that no Celtic supporter will ever forget with the image of Callum McGregor typical of the day.

A serious looking facial injury against Alloa had forced the midfielder out of Celtic’s SPFL games against Hearts and Dundee United.

Matt O’Riley had made his first two appearances in those games but was very short of midfield options with Yosuke Ideguchi joining David Turnbull in the treatment room and Tom Rogic away on international duty.

Wearing a specially prepared mask McGregor led from the front as Celtic raced into a 3-0 half time lead, moved to the top of the SPFL table and held on to that position until presentation day in May.

As recently as June the mask was still on when McGregor scored for Scotland in the World Cup Play Off defeat against Ukraine.

In July he was back on club duty, when he led Celtic out against Rapid Vienna there was no mask with the ‘old’ McGregor preparing for another season in his Celtic career.
