Carl Starfelt was pictured in training today as Celtic prepared for the SPFL opener against Aberdeen on Sunday.

The defender suffered an injury on international duty with Sweden and although he travelled with the Celtic squad to their training camp in Austria he hasn’t played in any of the pre-season matches.

Celtic released three images from training with Starfelt smiling with Tony Ralston in one of them.

Stephen Welsh has teamed up with Cameron Carter-Vickers in five of the six pre-season matches and looks likely to continue on Sunday.

Chris Jullien and Bosun Lawal were the back up pairing with Moritz Jenz joining last week on loan from Lorient.

Over the next four weeks Celtic only have weekend SPFL matches but could arrange some friendlies to give Starfelt playing time as he looks to regain his place in the side.

Starfelt and Carter Vickers played every minute of Celtic’s 18 SPFL matches from the turn of the year.

Mikey Johnston’s going out on loan then! To me that’s an indication that we are still one coach short of a full coaching staff! There’s no-one there who can take Mikey, or any youngster, from being a talent to being a player who can produce it on the park! That takes coaching know-how and the ability to put it cross to others. We just don’t have that! Mikey’s been around the first team long enough now, but it just hasn’t happened for him. A real pity, that!
