Six weeks after losing in the final of the Europa League Giovanni van Bronckhorst kicked off the new campaign with some very familiar problems.

When he named his side for the friendly against Sunderland serial crocks Filip Helander and Ryan Jack never even made it onto the substitute bench. Former Jamo John Souttar was also absent.

With both players out of contract next summer their situations look like being delicate- do they get offered new deals or run down their contracts between the treatment table and training ground.

Two days after signing, Antonio Colak was thrown in for his debut with Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe posted missing.

It looks like the former PAOK striker will be expected to lead the strike force in the Champions League qualifiers with Roofe left out of the squad in Portugal- after almost four months out of action Morelos is undergoing intensive conditioning work.

There was some good news with Nicky Katic making his first Tribute Act appearance in two years, last season he was sent out on loan to Hadjuk Split who turned down the option to make the move permanent.
