Filip Helander has suffered a new injury set-back as he prepared for his return to action.

The Swedish international was expected to be involved in tonight’s friendly against Sunderland but will sit it out as he enters the final season of his Ibrox contract.

Across all competitions last season Helander only made 11 appearances, in three full seasons at Ibrox he has started just 35 SPFL Premiership matches.

Covering Friday’s media conference in Q and A style, the Rangers Review reports:

How’s Filip Helander doing since he got back from injury?

Filip is doing well. He was doing well this week and then [on Thursday] he felt something so we kept him out of the training to make sure that we assess that feeling that he has even more. Hopefully he can continue the training very shortly.

John Souttar, Nicky Katic and Leon King are the other options to play alongside Conor Goldson. Strikers Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe will both miss tonight’s match through injury.

The Third Round Champions League qualifiers will be played on August 2/3 and 9.
