Jonathan Afolabi is on trial with Forest Green Rovers.

There has been no announcement from Celtic about the striker’s departure but after being sent on loan to Ayr United and Airdrie it was clear that the door had been closed on the former Southampton man.

Celtic signed Afolabi in the summer of 2019 but just like Lee O’Connor, Luca Connell and others there seemed to be no plan to develop his career.

Without any form of Reserve League he was restricted to playing in friendlies and Glasgow Cup ties although he continued to be involved with the Irish international squads, scoring for the u-21 side in a friendly against Wales last March.

Gloucestershire Live reports:

Former Celtic striker Jonathan Afolabi has reportedly been on trial with Forest Green Rovers.

The 22-year-old Irishman started his career with Southampton but never made an appearance for the senior team.

He then moved to Scottish giants Celtic but again found game time extremely limited and was loaned out to Dunfermline and Dundee before joining Ayr last summer.

He was most recently on the books of Airdrie, where he had a short spell at the end of last season scoring three goals in 15 appearances.

Last season former Celts Regan Hendry and Jack Aitchison helped Forest Green to promotion to League One.

Hendry remains at Forest Green with Aitchison returning to Barnsley who signed Connell during the close season.
