Dundee United are the latest club to count the cos of turning supporters away from football matches.

Ross County and Kilmarnock have already hosted Celtic in front of rows of shiny empty seats with the Dingwall club quickly seeing sense by increasing Celtic’s allocation for Wednesday’s League Cup tie.

United have apparently sold a record number of Season Tickets, 5,700 sold by July 22 but they were in short supply today.

The George Fox and Eddie Thompson Stands were both barely half full, it seems that recent results convinced Season Ticket holders to stay at home and suffer watching Sky Sports coverage of the match.

There isn’t much that United can do about that but they did decide to leave a large section of the Jerry Kerr Stand empty despite Celtic fans buying up every available seat in the stand.

Every empty seat cost United around £30, with the stand open and fans elsewhere a few more stewards could have earned the home club considerably more money.

10,181 fans paid in to the UEFA Conference tie against AZ Alkmaar earlier this month, 11,087 were recorded at today’s match in a stadium with a capacity of 14,223. On television there looked to be much more than 3,000 empty seats- all in the home sections.
