Yesterday Steven Thompson slipped out of his glad-rags to go behind the microphone to share his expert opinion from Tannadice with listeners to Radio Scotland.

With Celtic winning their first four matches while United were taking hidings from AZ Alkmaar, Hearts and St Mirren, the omens didn’t look great for the home side as they champions returned to the scene of last season’s title party.

An early injury to Joe Hart got the match off to a false start but including that six minute stoppage Kyogo Furuhashi tucked away the opener with 15 minutes on the clock.

There was 25 minutes between the first and second goals, during tha period Sportscene presenter Thompson made a fatal observation.

His mood didn’t pick up in the second half with a focus on United’s defensive problems rather than Celtic attacking movement and variety of goals.

Discussing goal number 8 Thompson said:

It’s a fabulous ball from Aaron Mooy into Daizen Maeda who does really well to spin, but again, no one for Dundee United in the middle marking Liel Abada. It’s a lovely finish, all made by Mooy’s pass. The kind you make in a training game.

For the ninth he said:

We’ve seen a lot of quality goals today, but that is just poor, poor marking from Dundee United, a free header in the middle of the box.

After the match Thompson had the comfort of driving home rather than a stint in the Sportscene studio where Jonathan Sutherland was presenting alongside Jackie McNamara and Kenny Millerr.

Earlier this month Thompson asked John Rankin if he thought the tie was over with Dundee United trailing 5-1 on aggregate at half time to AZ Alkmaar.

Lol remember this the guy that got the gig who got chased or failed it.
A presenter who asked a studio guest when Du Utd had Ben 5 nil down at half time in Europe a couple of weeks back is the game over.

Thompson continues to gain promotion at BBC Scotland . He will be a newsreader or weatherman soon! We all know it’s not that he’s gifted or talented at autocue reading, so it must be down to the grip! What else could it be ?
