It was always just a matter of time for Jon McLaughlin- one howler and the cry would go up to bring back Allan McGregor.

Unfortunately he committed more than one howler on the biggest stage of all. Before he had left the away dressing room at Celtic Park Ally McCoist and Kris Boyd were leading the calls to bring back Greegsy.

During pre-season Giovanni van Bronckhorst alternated between the two goalkeepers. McLaughlin lost a poor one at Livingston in the Premiership opener, he wasn’t too clever away to Union SG but his manager stuck by him.

McGregor played three games against Celtic, losing twice and drawing the other but the emotional pull of a name from the past is magnetic to Ibrox fans.

At 40 years of age McGregor is even more reluctant to leave his goal line. Low shots have always been a problem but he is still capable of showy touches over the bar.

Van Bronckhorst has Ajax to face on Wednesday and a big choice to make. Does he stand by the guy that the fans have given up on or go back to the ‘keeper that he dropped at the start of the season.

If it all goes Ajax’s way on Wednesday night Robbie McCrorrie might be looking out his gloves for Aberdeen on Saturday.
