As if losing 7-1 at home wasn’t bad enough Giovanni van Bronckhorst looks certain to be without Connor Goldson for the eight matches before the World Cup break.

Shirtly before half-time in last night’s Champions League humiliation the former Shrewsbury starlet overstretched trying to keep up with Darwin Nunez.

As Goldson lay out on the turf the significance was obvious to all watching inside the ground and at Ibrox. He has barely missed a minute of action in the last three years.

Alongside James Sands, Ben Davies and Leon King it has been Goldson that has kept defeats respectable, down to three or four per match.

Now van Bronckhorst has to plan ahead without Goldson, crocked alongside Filip Helander and John Souttar. During the summer Leon Balogun was released with Nicky Katic paid off to join FC Zurich.

Three weeks into his latest comeback Ryan Jack fell to the turf during the second half of last night’s humiliation clutching a sore leg.
