Gio’s Champions League record breakers!

Last night’s third goal from Napoli meant that Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side have lost more goals in a Champions League group than any other Scottish side- with one match still to come!

Back in season 2017/18 Celtic were heavily criticised as they lost 18 goals over six matches but that run did include a 3-0 win away to Anderlecht. PSG were responsible for 12 of those goals but along the way Brendan Rodgers’ side did score five goals.

Last season the Scottish media overdosed on two popular themes- that van Bronckhorst’s side had a style of play suited for European football and that most of their Europa League opponents were actually Champions League teams.

In five matches this season those myths have been demolished with the first warning sent out in July when Belgian mob Union SG beat van Bronckhorst’s side 2-0 in their first European match in almost 60 years.

That result was overturned in the return leg but their first ever appearance in the Champions League group stage has been a brutal experience.

In 2011 Dinamo Zagreb finished their campaign with zero points and a goal difference of -19, a defeat from Ajax next week will match that although there is consolation in Viktoria Pilzen who are currently on zero points and -17 ahead of their final group match facing Barcelona.
