At the age of 32 Leigh Griffiths is considering retirement with virtually no interest being shown in the striker.
It is an incredible descent for the striker less than two years after he came off the bench to convert a penalty for Scotland in their shoot out win over Serbia to reach the European Championships.
Griffiths was at Hampden to score against Hearts as Celtic won the delayed 2020 Scottish Cup Final but when the Euros came to Hampden he was watching Lyndon Dykes and Che Adams in action from the stand as a spectator.
Celtic handed the striker a 12 month contract in July of last year but after an incident during the summer he was sent out on loan to Dundee and Falkirk without rediscovering his goal touch.
Now after two matches for a lower league side in Australia Griffiths has told BBC Scotland that he his playing days might be over.
The longer it goes on I think, ‘Is football for me any more?’ I’ve been without a club for five months now and, although Davie [Martindale, Livingston manager] has said I can come in and train with them, he has said there is no deal on the table.
I’m still not seeing managers pick up the phone, which means do they want me at their club or is it time to call it a day? That is something I’m still considering at the minute.
As a free agent you’ve not got a budget, you’ve not got a price-tag on your head, everything is still negotiable.
Griffiths was warned by successive Celtic managers that his attitude would have to change to survive but the knack of finding the net was difficult for managers to ignore.
Now that the goals have dried up it is Griffiths that is being ignored.
Although he signed a 12 month Celtic contract in July 2021 the club never made any mention of his departure.
