Ally McCoist has already given up on Champions League football after Christmas at Ibrox.

Earlier this year the for Question of Sport skipper was crowing away about how Giovanni van Bronckhorst had created a team perfectly at home in European football.

Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig were seen off before losing to the 10th best team in the final of the Europa League in Seville.

Those results apparently confirmed the view that James Tavernier, Connor Goldson and John Lundstram were elite level players but three Champions League defeats have brought a dose of reality after last season’s freak show.

Picking up on McCoist’s confession on TalkSPORT, The Sun reports the former Ibrox boss saying:

I’ll be brutally honest – I don’t think we have any chance of qualification from the group.

I’m more half full than any guy you’ll meet, but I’m realistic but if you harbour any hopes of finishing third and getting into the Europa League, I think you have to take something from the Liverpool game at home.

Let’s be brutally honest – going to Napoli, look at them. They battered Liverpool 4-1, so that in itself will be a big ask.

Because of the result and poor performance in Amsterdam, I think it means you have to beat Ajax at home which will be difficult, but it’s a possibility.

But you’ll have to pick a point up from somewhere else, and as crazy as it may seem, the best chance of doing that is probably Liverpool at home.

The manager will be thinking about the effect on the team if they give us 6 or 7, which they are capable of doing, but at the same time you have to balance that with ‘I need a point here.’

Seems like being brutally honest doesn’t come naturally to McCoist.
